Jefferson Park's Pollinator Garden Blooms As Neighbors Plan Expansion

A summer intern is creating educational materials about the garden as its founders seek feedback and more volunteers to help plant and care for the native plants.

The garden started with native seed plantings around the Jefferson Park Memorial field house at 4822 N. Long Ave. in July 2022. Volunteers planted an additional garden near the park's forestry building in fall 2022. There are plans to gradually expand the garden to the edge of the park over the next few years.

This summer, Eloise Park, a rising sophomore at Columbia College, will serve as the garden's first intern, leading some new environmental education efforts.

Portage Park's Comic Bookstore Howling Pages Is Inviting Young Artists To Showcase And Sell Their Work

The shop is searching for creators 17 and younger who want to sell the comics, zines, illustrative artwork, stickers, prints or posters they've made.

Howling Pages at 4354 N. Milwaukee Ave., which opened in May, wants to showcase and sell visual art from young creators to give them a taste of what it's like to be a professional artist and market their work, founder and co-owner Alain Park said.

The shop is searching for creators and authors 17 and younger from all over Chicago who make comics, zines, illustrative artwork, stickers, prints or posters who want to take their passion to the next level, Park said.

Park's 17-year-old daughter, Eloise Park, is helping organize the youth shelf, which will sit next to the kid's section on the right side of the store close to the front door. The artist — who creates realistic, anatomical illustrations — said she plans to add her own work to the shelf.

Eloise Park looks forward to showcasing her work outside of school for the first time, she said. “It feels cool because I have never sold my art,” Eloise Park said. “I thought about selling it online, but this is a lot easier. It's going to get in front of people's faces. It's not like it's lost on social media.”

About Me

Hello! I am a Chicago native and an Environmental and Sustainability studies and illustration double major at Columbia College Chicago. I've been immersed in the Chicago art scene from a young age and thus very tied with my community. I am fascinated by the natural world and adopt much of its aesthetics into my artwork. Currently, I am practicing and studying to become a scientific illustrator one day. I aim to blend the worlds of art and science through my artwork as a means of making education accessible. I strongly believe that education through art will lead us to a more sustainable future. Feel free to say hi! I love meeting new people and hearing about their passions.
